The Enduring Image

PRIME MINISTER OF BRITAIN

I am delighted that The Enduring Image exhibition will be travelling to New Delhi and Mumbai in honour of India's 50th Anniversary of Independence.

The British Museum and the British Council have put together the widest selection of objects from the British Museum ever assembled for exhibition overseas. They could not have done so without the cooperation of the Department of Culture; National Museum, New Delhi and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai. This demonstrates perfectly the spirit of partnership that characterises contemporary Indo-British relations.

PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA

It was with great pleasure that I learnt of ' The Enduring Image' exhibition which is travelling to New Delhi and Mumbai in October 1997 as part of the celebrations of India's 50th Anniversary of Independence. This exhibition celebrates mankind's achievements and the fundamental human values that underlie and support these achievements - a love of liberty, truthfulness and compassion towards our fellows.

In keeping with this vision and of the universality of knowledge, several institutions in India and in the United Kingdom have made common cause in conceptualizing this unique show, representing diverse cultures.

'Enduring Image' aptly reflects the spirit of partnership that characterises contemporary Indo-British relations. I send my best whishes for the success of the exhibition, and compliment all those associated with it.
